Without healthy methylation, the human body may be vulnerable to all manner of serious health complications, particularly those relating to elevated homocysteine levels. Methyl-Guard Plus from Thorne Research contains the most active form of folate available for supplementation and a number of other important B complex vitamins for nutritional support of methylation and healthy homocysteine levels.
- Features 3 mg of the highly active folate in the form of L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate.
- Also contains a number of other essential B complex vitamins like Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6.
- Designed to aid in healthy methylation and homocysteine levels.
- May support the long-term health of the heart and brain.
A Brief Overview of Methylation and Homocysteine
Methylation is one of the most vital and underappreciated natural biochemical processes in the human body. In a nutshell, methylation is the transfer of a methyl group consisting of one carbon atom and three hydrogen atoms (CH3) to a substrate. That may still sound very complicated, but you don’t need a Phd in chemistry to understand the important role that this fundamental biochemical process plays in the human body.
As this is a process which occurs on a molecular level throughout the human body, it is essential to a wide variety of bodily systems and functions. These include neurotransmitter synthesis, detoxification, cardiovascular health, eye health, muscle health, bone health, and redox balance.
While all of these functions are crucial in maintaining a healthy body and mind, perhaps the most important role of methylation is the regulation of homocysteine levels. Methylation is a key feature of healthy homocysteine metabolism. If homocysteine levels are not properly metabolized then excessive homocysteine levels will may accumulate in the bloodstream, causing a number of serious potential health complications with both the heart and the brain.
Vitamins for Supporting Healthy Methylation
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is a universal methyl donor which is essential to providing the body with CH3. As such it is a necessary facilitator of methylation throughout the human body. However, in order for the body to produce adequate quantities of SAMe it must be fully supplied in a B Vitamin known as 5-MTHF which is the active and usable form of Folate (B9 or methylfolate).
There is some controversy surrounding the body’s capability to convert the Folic Acid which is commonly found in dietary supplements into a usable form. To circumvent this issue, Methyl-Guard Plus from Thorne Research contains folate in the highly active form of L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate to ensure maximum methylation support. In addition, this formulation contains a number of B complex vitamins which play a pivotal role in supporting healthy methylation and homocysteine metabolism.

Dosage and Use:
- Take 1-3 capsules daily or as recommended by your health practitioner.
Caution: 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) supplementation is not recommended concurrently with methotrexate cancer therapy, as it can interfere with methotrexate’s anti-neoplastic activity; however, 5-MTHF has not been shown to interfere with the anti-inflammatory activity of methotrexate. An individual taking methotrexate for psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis can safely take a supplement containing folate.
- If pregnant, nursing, or undergoing treatment for a medical condition, consult your physician before taking this product
- Keep out of reach of children
