What is a Membrane?

Membranes exist in just about every corner of the natural world. Anyone who has ever struggled to perfectly fry an egg is well aware of the fragile membrane which protects an egg yolk. But what are these thin, protective layers actually made of, and what is their purpose?

Lets address the latter question first: membranes can be thought of as similar to a computer’s firewall, or perhaps even as a gatekeeper. In spite of being so physically fragile, these amazing natural containers are able to determine which substances are allowed to pass through and which are restricted from entry. This makes them ideal for protecting all sorts of natural elements from threats like toxins, free radicals and other pathogens which could otherwise seep in and cause oxidative stress and other forms of serious damage. This uniquely protective quality that membranes possess is often referred to as selective permeability.

So, what is the composition of a typical membrane? The problem is that membranes come in so many different shapes and sizes that it’s difficult to generalize as to their composition. Instead, lets take a closer look at cell membranes in particular. As the name suggests, these are exceptionally small and crucially important membranes which protect cells – the building blocks of all organic matter.

diagram of cell membrane structure

While they may sound simple in concept, this diagram gives an accurate impression of the complexity of cell membranes. Note the phospholipid bilayer.

Despite all of the different lifeforms which contain cellular membranes, their composition is mostly the same. Cell membranes are primarily made of glycerophospholipids which are in turn comprised of glycerol and two fatty acid chains1. Understanding the fundamental structure of these membranes is key to making lifestyle choices which will further bolster the cells of the body against internal damage.

How to Support the Function and Integrity of Cellular Membranes

Now that we know what these membranes are composed of at a molecular level, that begs the question: what sorts of dietary decisions can be implemented to assist these membranes in their essential protective functions?

Given their dependence on fatty acid chains, one would naturally be lead to believe that lipids are an ideal class of dietary substance to aid in membrane integrity. This is generally true, but not every type of lipid is going to be capable of lending this support.

Phosphatidylcholines (PC) are an example of a glycerophospholipid (GPL) which, funnily enough, are often derived from everyone’s favorite membrane: the egg yolk’s. Thankfully, soybeans and sunflower seeds (the source utilized in Membrane Mend) also serve as vegetarian-friendly sources of PC.

As a Glycerophospholipid, PC is a common component of many biological membranes, including those found at a cellular level. As phrased in a 2012 scientific review on the subject, “One could speculate that uptake of n-3 fatty acids as GPLs are more efficiently incorporated into cellular membranes of different organs, thus affecting positively the membrane microstructure and its function.”2 It’s worth noting here that n-3 fatty acids most notably include another popular dietary ingredient known as Omega-3 fatty acids which also play a role in the function of membranes.3

The same study goes on to conclude that “GPLs as supplements could be very helpful in improving a great variety of health conditions.”2

The Membrane Mend Formula – PC & Beyond

While PC seems to be the most scientifically verified candidate for nutritional membrane support, there is still much to be expanded upon in this line of inquiry. As always, Quicksilver Scientific has positioned themselves at the forefront of this research with their Membrane Mend formula.

In addition to a powerful 460 mg dose of PC per serving, Membrane Mend also includes a refined Buglossoides arvensis seed oil known as Ahriflower®. Ahriflower® has been featured in studies from as recently as 2017 which indicate that the ingredient may aid in circulating n-3 fatty acid levels via fatty acid biosynthesis.4,5

Quicksilver Scientific Membrane Mend is the only formula on the market to date to combine the synergistic effects of these two crucial ingredients.
