Description
In an adult, cerebral blood flow is typically 750 milliliters per minutes or 15% of the cardiac output. Vinpocetine supports enhanced cerebral blood flow by dilating blood vessels and reducing blood viscosity. Vinpocetine may help cerebral metabolism by helping to maintain healthy blood flow and oxygen utilization.45
Vinpocetine is derived from vincamine, the major indole alkaloid of the periwinkle plant. No toxic effects have been seen from vinpocetine use at levels far above those recommended for this product.
When taken orally, vinpocetine is easily absorbed131,132 and it can:
- Improve blood supply to the brain133-138
- Increase oxygen and glucose use by the brain133,138-140
- Maintain optimal energy of healthy brains132,138-140,146,147
- Maintain normal coagulation of blood148
- Maintain healthy levels of some neurotransmitters134,149,150
- Promote healthy attention, memory and concentration135,151-158
In a double-blind clinical trial, researchers split 84 people with age-related cognitive issues into two groups. One took 10 milligrams vinpocetine every day for a month, then 5 milligrams for another two months.6 The other group took a placebo. The vinpocetine group performed significantly better on cognitive tests and exhibited improved mood.
A separate three-month trial confirmed that vinpocetine supports healthy blood flow in the brain even while you’re at rest. Vinpocetine ingestion was found to significantly improve intracerebral blood flow after just 12 weeks.7
Vinpocetine’s power to support cognitive function has gained worldwide recognition: so much so that it’s available as a prescription drug in nearly 50 countries, including Hungary, Germany, Poland, Russia, and Japan.6,8
