The Importance of Starting the Day Properly Moisturized
Everyone knows that healthy skin needs to be moisturized, but just why is it so important? The primary reason is that skin needs moisture to be able to repair itself. It is a natural process for old skin cells to shed and be replaced with new cells. A good moisturizer facilitates this process both by helping to shed the old cells and by helping to regenerate the young skin cells which take their place. While this process happens naturally in young people, older skin loses its ability to shed and regenerate efficiently. This is the cause behind a number of negative cosmetic effects on the skin associated with aging; effects include wrinkling, drying and sagging. Proper moisturization and nourishment is the most effective way to fight these conditions of old age.1
Shea butter and green tea extract are included in this formula because they are widely known to provide the necessary moisture and nourishment to keep your skin looking and feeling young and healthy.
Retinyl Palmitate Supports Healthy Skin from the Inside Out
Retinyl palmitate is a derivative of retinol (vitamin A) and palmitic acid (fatty acid found in palm oil). Perhaps its most important feature is the small size of its molecular structure. These small molecules are perfectly sized to penetrate the outer layers of the skin and work their way into the lower layers where they provide necessary support to the collagen and elastin. It accomplishes this by encouraging communication between cells, improving their regenerative abilities and thus preventing the further appearance of sagging skin and wrinkles. In addition, retinyl palmitate acts as a powerful exfoliator, helping the upper dermal layer to shed and supporting the regeneration of fresh skin cells.2
Maintaining Moisturization with Ceramides
Ceramides are a waxy material which occur naturally on the outer surface of the skin. They join together to form a waterproof seal on the outer layers of the skin in order to conserve moisture and maintain proper skin hydration. In fact, newborn infants are coated in this waxy substance to prevent them from losing too much moisture, helping to keep them hydrated during that critical developmental phase. Not only do ceramides help the skin stay properly moisturized, they also support repairs to the outer layers of the skin and healthy regulation of dermal cells.3
While ceramides are produced naturally in the body, as we age our bodies tend to produce less and less of them. Lacking a strong supply of ceramides will cause the skin to become cracked and dried much quicker, and its ability to repair itself will diminish greatly. This loss of moisture and self-repair is thought to be a critical factor in the wrinkling of skin and even in dermatitis. Supplementing for ceramides is crucial to providing lasting moisturization and nourishment to the skin, especially at advanced ages.
