Description
Lycopene may be an important substance in maintaining prostate health.501-507 In addition, the strong lipid antioxidant properties of lycopene make it particularly effective in maintaining healthy LDL oxidation and protecting against free radical activity on the arterial wall.509-516 Improved tomato extraction methods have given consumers access to supplements that contain greater concentrations of lycopene at lower prices.
There are numerous recent studies, including human trials, that support lycopene’s potential to support prostate cancer. These trials also indicate supplementation with lycopene lowered the PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels along with higher levels of cancer cell death and smaller tumors overall.1
Studies have also shown lycopene may support the prevention of coronary heart disease (CHD). It may prevent the formation of plaque in the arteries. It has also been shown to help block cholesterol synthesis. In a population based study, lycopene indicates a lower occurrence of heart attacks.2
