The Nutritional Contents and Heart Health Benefits of Clove

Most people know cloves as pungent and flavorful dried buds which are ground and used as a cooking ingredient. As with most potent spices, cloves are packed with highly bioavailable forms of many valuable nutrients. The USDA reports that 100 grams of cloves in their ground form contain as much as 65 grams of carbohydrate, 6 grams of protein, 13 grams of lipids, and 33 grams of dietary fiber, with significant quantities of vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, and vitamin K. The USDA also reports the presence of essential dietary minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, and zinc.¹

Studies have shown that clove extracts may also have an impact on blood glucose levels. Consumption of clove extract may support healthy blood glucose levels already within a natural range due to its effect on phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) and glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase) gene expression.² This supplement contains the most widely used and tested clove extract, Clovinol®.

Delphinol® and the Heart Health Benefits of Delphinidin

Delphinol® is an extract of maqui berries – a fruit commonly found in Chile, and rarely anywhere else. As with many berries, maqui berries have displayed impressive nutritional and antioxidant properties, the most distinguishing of which being their high concentration of delphinidin. Due to the difficulty most Americans would have with obtaining fresh maqui berries at a reasonable price, Delphinol® was created to spread the nutritional benefits of the maqui berry, and its high delphinidin content, throughout the world.

In addition to being an exceptionally powerful antioxidant, delphinidin supports multiple traits and functions of a healthy cardiovascular system due to its effect on endothelial nitric oxide synthase expression and expression of vaso-constrictory endothelin-1. Delphinidins may also play a role in inhibiting the expression of certain vascular cell adhesion molecules (VCAM) and Intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM).³ The nutritionally supportive role delphinidins play in the cardiovascular system may help, alongside of healthy dietary choice, to maintain healthy blood glucose levels.
