History and Definition of Black Seed

Black seed, also known as black cumin, is derived from the Nigella Sativa plant, native to Northern Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Indian Subcontinent, and other surrounding areas. Contrary to one of its nicknames, Nigella Sativa is in no way related to Cumin. However, black seed and cumin do share a number of similarities.

First and foremost, both cumin and black seed are spices which are heavily used in traditional recipes throughout the aforementioned regions (various Indian curry recipes are a notable example). Also, both of these popular spices are rich in nutritional compounds which have been utilized in traditional health practices for centuries.

That said, the actual health properties of these two ingredients are vastly different. Let’s unpack the properties of Black seed according to the most current scientific literature.

The Health Properties of Thymoquinone and Enerex Black Seed Oil

While black seed has a long history of use in traditional medicine, its presence in western medicine and nutritional practices has been less distinct. Numerous ingredients of this nature have been found to have significant health properties when placed under the microscope. In fact, cumin is yet again a useful comparison in this case.

While there are over 100 active chemical compounds in black seed, it’s immediately worth noting that a chemical known as thymoquinone (TQ) is the most active component of black seed. It is also thought that TQ is the primary source of its health properties.

So, what does the current science have to say about thymoquinone and black seed? To evaluate this, we will rely on a 2013 review of over 100 studies conducted on the effects of black cumin.1 Let’s cover some of the most prominent nutritional properties of black seed as covered by said review:

  • Immunomodulation – The immune system is dependent on numerous “immune cells” to adequately respond to and neutralize pathogens which might otherwise harm the body. Some studies have indicated that black cumin may be able to support a variety of these cells in their overall health and functionality.
  • Antioxidant/Anti-inflammatory – Oxidative stress and inflammation have a lot in common. One such commonality is that they can both be negated by the body’s innate antioxidant activity. In situations where the body is incapable of producing an adequate supply of the necessary antioxidants, it may be useful to ingest certain compounds which have displayed a capacity for antioxidant activity. Thankfully, thymoquinone is one such compound.
  • Cardiovascular – Right off the bat, it’s worth noting that any compound which exhibits antioxidant properties is likely to provide meaningful support for the cardiovascular system. Oxidative stress and inflammation are capable of inflicting and damaging numerous cells and systems within the human body. The cardiovascular system is no exception. In a study which evaluated the effects of diesel exhaust particles on cardiopulmonary parameters in mice, TQ was shown to provide support for various cardiovascular functions which would have been severely hampered otherwise.
