Nutritional Properties of Carotenoids.
Mega Multivitamins and Minerals from Dr’s Advantage contains carotenoids Lutein and Lycopene. Carotenoids are actually plant pigments found in the skins of many brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Not only do these pigments give fruits and vegetables their color, carotenoids are also extremely valuable nutrients with a healthy human body.
Lutein is primarily known for its role as a pigment in the human eye, where it is thought to function as a light filter, helping to protect the eyes against damage from sunlight. Supplementing for additional Lutein may help ensure that these protective systems are functioning at their fullest. Many multivitamins contain Lutein, but in too small of amounts to be fully effective (0.25 mg).1 This formulation contains a much more significant amount (1 mg) of this valuable carotenoid.
As a pigment, Lycopene has a red color. As such it can be found in most red fruits and vegetables, particularly in tomatoes. The most valuable asset of Lycopene is perhaps its antioxidant properties.2
The Value and Function of Antioxidants
Not only does this formulation contain the powerful antioxidant, Lycopene. It contains a number of other ingredients with similar antioxidant properties. These include Alpha Lipoic Acid, Choline, Inositol, and a Proprietary Antioxidant Berry Blend.
Antioxidants are substances which support the neutralization of free radicals. Free radicals are atoms which are defined by their possession of an unpaired electron. They are known to cause damage and imbalance to the cells of the body by stealing a pair for their unpaired electron from otherwise balanced and healthy atoms. The damage caused by this process is known as cell oxidation, or oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is thought to be a significant factor in the aging and degeneration of the human body. 3 Antioxidants support the body against oxidative stress by providing a pair for unpaired electrons, subverting the damage that would otherwise be done to bodily cells and tissues.
