Discover the 5 Smart Health Goals for Health and Wellness You Can Do Today!

Yes, 2019 is more than half way over, but, if you’re like me, you don’t wait for a new year to make changes. If you see a change that needs to be made, why wait?

Here are 5 Goals for Health and Wellness you should evaluate now and make any necessary changes to help promote health in your life.

  1. Focus on your Gut Health
  2. Quit Bottles Water
  3. Cut Back on Sugar
  4. Be Nice to Yourself
  5. Pay Attention To Toxins

Keep reading to learn how you can accomplish these goals today

  1. Focus on your Gut Health

Gut health is so incredibly important. I can’t stress this enough: focus on the health of your gut! The gut microbiome has recently been thrust into the spotlight as more and more research continues to come out about how crucial a healthy microbiome is for your overall health. The microbiome consists of trillions of microorganisms (also called microbiota or microbes) of thousands of different species. [1]

The gut microbiome is about as unique as one’s fingerprint. The gut is really a delicate organ and so many factors determine the composition of your microbiome. These factors include genetics, whether you were born via cesarean section or vaginally, medication use, stress levels, and, of course, diet plays a huge part.

Poor gut health can manifest in a number of ways, some of which may seem completely unrelated to your digestive tract. In fact, approximately 70% of one’s immune system is determined in the gut. [2] Basically, if your gut health is subpar, that flu shot won’t help, and you don’t stand a chance during cold and flu season.

Here are some signs your gut may need a pick me up:

  • Frequent Colds
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Trouble Sleeping
  • Skin Issues
  • Autoimmune Disease
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Sugar Cravings
  • Anxiety or Depression

So how can you improve your gut health? First, take a daily Probiotic. If you absolutely have to take a round of traditional antibiotics, in addition to your daily Probiotic add in a dose of this specific probiotic, Nutrispec Immune Power, during the antibiotic course and for at least 30 days following completion of antibiotics.

Load up on fermented foods! Fermented foods are great for gut health. Think sauerkraut, kimchi, and kombucha. These foods contain live cultures that can aid digestion by helping to break down foods. They also offer tons of immune support. And stay away from processed foods. Processed foods are essentially toxic, foreign substances that wreak havoc on your gut.

In addition to these helpful tips, see a doctor who specializes in gut health. Your primary care physician likely knows little about the complex nature of the gut. This isn’t really something that is covered in medical school since the research is fairly cutting-edge. However, there are plenty of providers out there who are passionate about gut health and have dedicated their careers to it. Find one of these practitioners to lead you on your journey to better gut health.

  1. Quit Bottled Water ASAP

Yep, I said it. Quit drinking bottled water. This suggestion is really two-fold. First, it really is bad for your health and it’s equally as bad for the environment. Plus, it can get expensive. Ok, it’s three-fold. I do want to be clear here. I don’t mean stop drinking water, in fact, you should drink more water- just not out of a disposable plastic bottle.

Bottled water could potentially be manipulating your endocrine system. Two recent studies “found evidence of estrogenic activity in mineral water. Both studies focused on the estrogenic potential of mineral water bottled in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, the material constituting most convenience−size beverage bottles sold in the United States today.” [3]

Estrogen is the main female sex hormone. While, everyone does need estrogen, too much can cause serious problems. Excess estrogen in females can cause infertility, weight gain, bloating, fatigue, headaches, depression, anxiety, and low sex drive, just to name a few. [4] Increased estrogen in males can cause infertility and erectile dysfunction among other issues. [4]

A bottle of water here and there is fine but drinking multiple bottled beverages a day could affect your health. These health risks increase when bottled beverages are exposed to heat. And while you may keep your bottled water cool, my guess is that the warehouses and delivery trucks don’t. It just came to light in recent news that UPS truck cabs aren’t even air conditioned (this is awful by the way). So, you know storage compartments in delivery trucks aren’t temperature controlled and I bet they get pretty hot.

In addition to the estrogenic chemicals, “[t]esting commissioned by Environmental Working Group in 2008 found 38 pollutants in 10 brands of bottled water, including disinfection byproducts, industrial chemicals, radioactivity and bacteria. Some of the chemicals detected have been linked to health effects, including cancer and methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome). Two of the brands tested even bore the chemical signature of municipal tap water, meaning that they were chemically indistinguishable from what comes from the faucet.” [5]

I recommend investing in a quality at home filtration system and some stainless steel or glass reusable bottles. There are a couple of things to remember with at home filtration systems. A countertop filtration system is best because the filtration occurs after any potential heavy metal exposures in pipes or faucets. For the highest quality water, invest in a filtration system that incorporates a carbon filter coupled with reverse osmosis.

  1. Cut Back on Sugar

This may be harder than you think. Sure, it’s easy to forego dessert or to skip those cookies in the break room but sugar is hiding everywhere. The World Health Organization recommends that adults should not consume more than 25 grams of sugar per day. [6] One can of soda contains 39 grams of sugar. That’s almost 150% of the daily recommended amount. And we wonder why obesity and type-2 diabetes are through the roof?

To further complicate things, “Much of the sugars consumed today are “hidden” in processed foods that are not usually seen as sweets.” [6] So you have to be diligent about checking labels. Or, better yet, stick to whole foods that don’t need labels.

Cutting back on sugar may seem like an attainable health goal; however, it may not be as easy as you think. Not only is sugar everywhere, it is also highly addictive. Studies in mice have found sugar to be more addictive than cocaine. [7] And the food companies want it this way. Think about it, if you’re addicted to highly processed foods full of refined sugars, that means more money for them. So don’t expect the food manufacturers to help out with any healthier alternatives. You have to be diligent and take control over what you put in your body and, ultimately, take control of your health. A good rule of thumb is that if it has a commercial, don’t eat it.

  1. Be Nice to Yourself

A 2018 school experiment went viral. I’m sure you saw it. There were two plants, one was exposed exclusively to positive comments and the other was exposed exclusively to negative comments. After 30 days the plant with the negative comments was wilted and dying while the positive comment plant was flourishing. The same thing happens in people and the majority of the comments we hear come from within.

If you missed it, here is the viral video:

We all have a sound track playing in our minds and what is on that sound track has an astounding influence on our overall health. I am a huge advocate of therapy and counseling but, ultimately, we are in control of our disposition. Sometimes you just have to choose joy. I know this is easier said than done but emotional strength comes with practice.

Practicing mindfulness is a great way to enhance your emotional strength. I’m fairly new to the concept of mindfulness but I can honestly say, all the hype is warranted. “Mindfulness. It’s a pretty straightforward word. It suggests that the mind is fully attending to what’s happening, to what you’re doing, to the space you’re moving through. That might seem trivial, except for the annoying fact that we so often veer from the matter at hand. Our mind takes flight, we lose touch with our body, and pretty soon we’re engrossed in obsessive thoughts about something that just happened or fretting about the future. And that makes us anxious.” [8] There are countless books on mindfulness so find one that is appealing to you and give it a shot.

How you can accomplish this goal today – Take 5 minutes in the stillness of the morning, and remember you are amazing.

  1. Pay Attention to Toxins

There is so much that is still not known about the plethora of chemicals that compose everyday products. However, research is in full swing and we’re learning new things every day. I encourage you to stay on top of this research and adjust accordingly.

Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Autism, infertility, autoimmune diseases, and so many other chronic conditions are rising at alarming rates and I would be willing to bet that the cause of all this lies somewhere in all those chemicals. I don’t think there’s one specific culprit, I think it’s a combination of what we eat and put on our bodies whether it’s processed foods, anti-aging night cream, or the latest pharmaceutical drug on the market. As a society, we have to make an effort to be more educated about what is being marketed to us.

Choosing Green is the best way to resist toxins.

I don’t think there’s any ill intent with incorporating these chemicals into consumer goods (at least I hope there isn’t) but there’s always a lag when it comes to technological advances. Think about it, when cars first came out people just held babies in their laps- there were no car seats. We wouldn’t dream of doing this today. In fact, it would be classified as child endangerment, but those people riding around with babies on their laps didn’t want to hurt anyone, they just didn’t know any better. I think something similar is happening with chemicals. Once more research comes to light, regulations will be put in place to safeguard consumers, but until then you have to be your own advocate and do your own research.

No one has all the answers. No one does everything right all the time. But if you’re like most people and want to live a healthier life, take these five discussions to heart. Do a little better every day and make small changes. Achieving optimal health is a marathon, not a sprint.
