Glutathione and Eye Health – The building blocks including N-Acetyl-Cysteine

Recent studies suggest that glutathione may help prevent eye diseases. This natural antioxidant produced by all living cells has an important role in protecting our eyes. This is true for people of any age, but especially for those approaching their 60’s or 70’s as levels of glutathione tend to diminish with age. We all need this vital nutrient and we need to build what I call the glutathione pipeline. Dr. Mark Hyman says this about glutathione: “is the most important molecule you need to stay healthy and prevent aging, cancer, heart disease, dementia and more, and necessary to treat everything from autism to Alzheimer’s disease. I called it the mother of all antioxidants.”

Diet and Glutathione

It is important that we eat sulfur rich foods like garlic, ginger, brassica sprouts, eggs and onions. Also include cruciferous vegetables in your diet like broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, and watercress. Meat and eggs are good sources of sulfur. Fresh fruit is another great way to get glutathione. Of the fruit family avocado is highest in sulfur content. Others rich in sulfur are kiwi, bananas, pineapple and strawberries. Melons, grapefruit, grapes, oranges and peaches are also fruits that are high in this essential mineral. Other sources to get glutathione include things like grains, sesame seeds, cashews, peanuts, pistachios and other nuts.

Development of Glutathione

It is important that we use good building blocks to help build our glutathione levels as well as supplements that promote the production and retention of glutathione. These building blocks would include N-Acetyl-Cysteine which is a precursor to glutathione and helps your body make it. Whey protein is great source of cysteine and the amino acid building blocks for glutathione synthesis. Ascorbate C helps you retain glutathione longer at the cellular level. Exercise 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least 3 times a week and strength training exercises a few times a week are helpful as well.

Delivery of Glutathione

There are only two delivery systems that are effective in getting glutathione directly into our system. Liposomal and suppositories offer great absorption and are effective in boosting glutathione levels.

It is important to start building your glutathione levels today. Do not wait to develop a problem, but seek to prevent one.
