GABA – A Natural Alternative to Valium and Xanax?

Most people have never heard of GABA, let alone know what it does in the body. However, for those suffering from anxiety or insomnia, this important neurotransmitter can be the key to reducing symptoms.

In fact, many medications that are used to treat these conditions function by boosting the activity of GABA in the brain. Benzodiazepines like Valium and Xanax for example, are in a class of anti-anxiety drugs that work by enhancing the activity of GABA receptors to calm the nerves and alleviate anxiety.

Unlike Valium and Xanax that have addictive qualities, Ultra Bliss is:

  1. Natural – Uses Phenyl GABA to reduce anxiety through neutrotransmitter optimization
  2. Safe – Remember, it has no caffeine, stimulants or GMO ingredients
  3. Non Habit Forming – Our customers love this product, Ultra Bliss can help enhance any lifestyle.

What is GABA?

Dr. David Jockers says this about GABA, “GABA is like the brakes in a car to slow down brain activity and help us relax and maintain a sense of calmness.”

GABA is a non-essential amino acid (meaning our bodies make it) and our brains produce it naturally. When nerve cells become out of control, they promote feelings of mental restlessness and anxiety. Many studies have found that anxiety is most common when GABA levels are low!

The brain uses GABA to “cool-down” these out of control nerve cells, thus promoting feelings of relaxation and calm through GABA neurotransmitter optimization.

Ultra Bliss targets GABA neurotransmitters and “cools them down” with Phenyl GABA!

What does GABA do?

The function of GABA is to act as a neurotransmitter for our brain cells to communicate.  It blocks or inhibits impulses between nerve cells in the brain. Another important function of GABA is its ability to lower the activity levels of neurons in our central nervous system. (WebMd)

Your brain’s hypothalamus which controls it your nervous system and pituitary gland and is responsible for maintaining homeostasis throughout your body. It regulates your appetite, sleep patterns and body temperature.

The hypothalamus also contains a particularly high amount of GABA receptors. This makes poor GABA function a key underlying source of hypothalamus-related health problems like adrenal fatigue.

Our brains need a balance of both excitement and inhibition. An unstable balance, or too much excitement may contribute to restlessness, insomnia and irritability. GABA helps to balance this out, naturally. It also boosts production of endorphins – feel-good hormones – in our brain.

How is GABA Effective for Anxiety?

As we learned earlier, Nerve excitability could be linked to feelings of anxiety and fear.

One of the main functions of GABA is to reduce this excitability and produce a calming effect. In fact, certain anxiety disorders have even been associated with decreased levels of GABA.

Since the body produces GABA naturally and diminishes the activity of neurons, it allows the body to achieve a sense of calm which in turn, can alleviate stress and anxiety. We know that low levels of GABA are associated with anxiety and boosting these levels with a supplement can lead to a number of positive effects on the body and mind:

1. Relaxation
2. Reduced stress
3. Balanced mood
4. Pain management
5. Better sleep

What Scientific Studies Are Saying…

Research has shown that GABA may play a significant role in protecting against depression and anxiety.

In a 2009 study in the Biological Psychiatry journal, researchers found that increasing GABA levels may be useful in the treatment of anxiety. The same journal conducted a study in 2010 which also showed that people with major depression may be more likely to have low levels of GABA abd Serotonin. These results are consistent with the fact that GABA is the primary calming (inhibitory) neurotransmitter in the brain.

Even more interesting to me as someone who has been diagnosed with Panic Disorder (an anxiety disorder characterized by recurring panic attacks) was a study in the American Journal of Psychiatry. It found that those with panic disorder had an impaired GABA response.

To further solidify these results, another study from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons’ Department of Psychiatry showed decreased brain concentrations of GABA in people with panic disorder and a family history of mood and anxiety disorders.

In addition to preventing anxiety and regulating sleep, the GABA neurotransmitter is also thought to play a central role in depression. Research has found that people with depression tend to have lower levels of GABA than those without depression.

GABA levels may also increase after depression is treated. One study from the Department of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine showed that patients who underwent electroconvulsive therapy for their depression exhibited increased levels of GABA following treatment.

Thanks to its antidepressant effect, GABA may be a good alternative to traditional treatments for depression.

How Do You Know if Your Body Is Not Producing Enough GABA?

Look for these indicators…

  1. A poor diet
  2. Excessive caffeine
  3. Lack of B-vitamins

These can lead to a GABA deficiency. Other factors may include lack of sleep, stress or alcohol
withdrawal.

You may experience symptoms including:

  1. Anxiousness
  2. Depression and/or Mood Disorders
  3. Dizziness
  4. Headache
  5. Insomnia
  6. Heart Palpitations
  7. Rapid Heartbeat
  8. Restlessness
  9. Tinnitus

Few Foods Actually Contain GABA!

You cannot get GABA from many foods.  A few fermented products like Kimchi and Tempeh contain some and there are others (fruits, vegetables, almonds) that help to boost the body’s own production of GABA.

This is where supplementation comes in.

Find Your Balance with Life Vitality Ultra Bliss

In the past I’ve had trouble finding a good anxiety supplement to recommend.

Those that combine therapeutic amounts of the effective ingredients are expensive, and most of the supplements I’ve seen include a whole host of poorly chosen ingredients (including sedating herbs) and are not really targeted to the specific brain chemical profile of the anxious brain.

Ultra Bliss combines Phenyl-GABA, Taurine, TMG, L-Tyrosine, L-Theanine and Oxytriptan at 4000 mg to make for natural relaxation with the help of amino acids. It is naturally sweetened with Stevia to make it an all around natural solution for relaxation, cognitive support and mental focus.

Ultra Bliss is designed to nutritionally aid in a balanced mood, a clear state of mind, and the ability to focus for extended periods of time. A unique blend of ingredients is combined to support neurotransmitter function in the brain and elsewhere throughout the entire central nervous system of the body.

Its effects have not been studied on pregnant or breastfeeding women and therefore should be avoided by this population. Additionally, if you’re already taking medications for depression, anxiety or insomnia, you may want to talk to your doctor before starting supplementation as it could interfere with or interact with the effectiveness of these medications.

Doses can vary based on age, sex and weight. Before starting supplementation, it’s best to talk to your doctor and determine if it’s right for you. Your doctor can also assist in setting up your dosage. For anxiety, some doctors recommend taking between 250 milligrams to 650 milligrams three times daily, for a total of 750–1,950 milligrams. It’s best to start with a lower dose and work your way up to make sure you’re able to tolerate it well and find the dosage that works best for you.
